A while ago, we had a discussion over dinner about the merits of higher education. I was trying my best to argue against non-functional and non-essential education: getting a Masters degree just for the sake of getting one, and so on. From the length of the conversation, it appears I wasn’t very successful at convincing everyone else about my position. A couple of nights ago I came across this passage
When a society is rich, its people don’t need to work with their hands; they can devote themselves to activities of the spirit. We have more and more universities and more and more students. If students are going to earn degrees, they’ve got to come up with dissertation topics. And since dissertations can be written about everything under the sun, the number of topics is infinite. Sheets of paper covered with words pile up in archives sadder than cemeteries…[1]

Food and the need for a colorscheme

Recently, I was in Montreal and one evening we were considering what to eat. Being the guest of honour, I got to pick the food and after a long contemplation I decided that the best bet was to eat something hearty. Something wholesome and very uncomplicated. So we walked over to Schwartz’s Deli, and what a meal! This places and other places like it are why I am addicted to eating!
And the order ?

For the past 2 or 3 days the western media has been satisfying their macabre obsession with a murder case of a little girl. The news that a possible suspect is arrested has been plastered all over newspapers, and TV. It turns out today that the confessions they got from the guy seem very contradictory with facts. No matter, the brave western media marches on in search of truth. The little girl’s face is on all daily newspapers and everyone is searching for answers.
Meanwhile the death toll in Lebanon hits 1,300 and more than a third are children. Perhaps if the children in Lebanon all had Anglo-Saxon names, and were aspiring beauty queens we would see their photos on the dailies here in the west.

Another Month

Another month and the humans have managed to yet again kill each other. There’s nothing new in that, but this time I think I’m seeing more and more how the little people are helpless in fighting injustices committed against them. No one gives a damn. And it’s these kinds of events that trigger in people the need to have some divine power to exist. When the oppressed can’t have justice, that’s when they wish for other-worldly justice to be delivered to their oppressors.

I’ve been dabbling in high-level computing for a while now. My work doesn’t lead me to the guts of the computer. I don’t have to use the command line to make my daily bread. I am a suite! But I realized today how much I miss hacking around on it. There’s something about the black background, with white text (and some colored characters thrown in for fun) that’s intriguing and makes you want to explore. The Commodore64 was my first introduction to the command line – and in fact to computers – and I still haven’t overcome the mystery of those glowing characters!
Maybe it’s time I basked in that glow again!

I need to do some thinking… I have realized that people are two-faced. Especially most of the ones I know! Ok, maybe not two-faced but very insincere. Perhaps I just need to cope with it, smile and go on with the realization that I should take everything with a grain of salt.
A post

I finally decided to post something here. Maybe just to confirm to myself that I’m still interested in keeping a weblog, but all I could muster was a meagre change to the personal section and as you can see, even that’s not much!
I should probably change my resume at some point too, but given my current market value that might not be such a good idea!
